Music is a huge part of weddings across the world—so you want yours to go just right! We’ve got a few ideas for you to consider to make sure your wedding is the celebration of the century.
Make Sure Your DJ Knows the Ropes
There’s nothing wrong with interrogating your DJ before choosing them. Make sure they’re familiar with their equipment and have plenty of experience. A good DJ should be a professional one, not someone with a side job, and they should be familiar with a variety of parties. Ask them some ideas about song lists and their plans for getting a crowd moving—a good DJ knows how to make a room come alive!
Processionals and Recessionals
The music comes on and the guests look to the back as the wedding party advances to the front of the room. But what will they be marching to? And what will play as they leave when the happy couple is no longer bride and groom but husband and wife? Like lighting, dress, and staging, these choices help set the tone for the rest of the wedding: traditional or modern, classy or casual, it’s up to you!
There are the traditional songs, of course. Wagner’s Bridal March (a.k.a. Here Comes the Bride) and Pachelbel’s Canon in D are the most famous for the processional, and anyone who hears them instantly knows what’s going on. The Wedding March by Mendelssohn makes a classic send-off from the altar. But there are contemporary options, too. For newer love songs, if you don’t want the song to overshadow your ceremony, consider piano or string arrangements of them. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, for example, still fills the room with hope and gladness when played on ukulele!
Songs to Dance to
With an event as big as a wedding, it can be tough finding something everyone will enjoy. As much as you want to include some of your personal favorites, it’s also important to choose popular songs everyone knows to get people out of their shell and on the dance floor! Try to spread it out among the decades, too: Macarena from the 90s, Thriller from the 80s, and I Gotta Feeling from the 2000s are all great to get people moving! Consider songs like Livin’ on a Prayer, Stayin’ Alive and YMCA too—even if they’re not everyone’s favorites, they get people singing along.
